What’s the difference between impact windows and hurricane windows?

The terms are used interchangeably in the industry. People may call impact windows “hurricane-rated impact windows” or “storm windows” but they generally mean the same thing.

What are impact windows?

Impact windows are built with a laminated glass which is resistant to high wind pressure, wind-borne debris, and forced entry.

Glass in windows and doors are often the most vulnerable part of a home’s exterior envelope. So, when hurricanes hit, which should be expected when living in Florida, having impact rated doors and windows or hurricane shutters is a must to protect your home.

While hurricane shutters are effective, they only work if installed before the storm arrives. Impact windows and doors provide the same opening protection without the additional effort of hauling, installing, removing and storing shutters. They are always ready to protect your home – no additional effort needed.

Do impact windows work?

Impact windows are the most effective way to protect your home against hurricane force winds and wind-borne debris and offer several added benefits to homeowners. All impact windows installed in the State of Florida are thoroughly tested to withstand the impact of flying debris during a storm and then continue to protect the home from water intrusion and pressurization after the impact.

During hurricanes, it is common for wind-borne debris to penetrate the building envelope through the broken glass of window & door openings, causing wind pressure inside the building to increase dramatically. This internal pressurization can cause significant structural damage and can even initiate the complete structural failure of the building. For this reason, wind-borne debris protection has become mandatory in hurricane prone regions.

Pulling the trigger on replacing single pane crank windows and doors can be daunting, especially when you realize just how many players are in the business. I got many quotes and met many characters. I ended up choosing Advanced for multiple reasons. They were the only ones to show up with samples of their products on the first visit, showing what makes their product better (had one company say I'd need to enter contract before they'd bring samples out). They were patient and more than willing to change the quote through numerous color changes, window type changes etc. Were they the cheapest? No. But a combination of great reviews and a product that did seem superior, I pulled the trigger and it all seemed to be true! Great communication through the process and the install team (MJ & Slim) were great and tidy. Peace of mind is worth a lot these days and that's what you get with Advanced. Oh, and the city inspector said it was some of the best work he'd seen!

A Window Contractor Who Restored My Faith in Honest Business

I got five estimates for new impact windows – the kind with built-in grids so you don't have to clean each square, and no condensation issues. Every company promised 3-6 months for installation.

Then Al Salazar from Advanced Home Windows & Decor came by with Fred. He measured everything, explained every detail, and showed us setbacks and potential issues that nobody else even mentioned. That same night, they called to see if I had questions. When I said yes, Al came back the next day to walk me through everything again.

His timeline? Six to eight weeks. I placed my order the next day – all windows and sliding doors, $8,000 deposit.

I've been in the blind business my entire life (we owned Blinds Galore and More before retiring), so I know this industry inside and out. I have never met a more honest, sincere, and dedicated businessman. What really tells you everything you need to know? His employees. They speak about him with such respect – he's kind, gentle, and they'll never leave him.

Englewood Glass installed new PGT vinyl windows throughout our house in 2019. We love the windows, but to this date, several of them do not lock or appear to be locked when they are not. When we first noticed the problem, Englewood came out to do a one-time adjustment, but problem reoccurs. It’s annoying!
